Learn More About NIDA's HIV/AIDS Avant Garde Award Program

On April 27 from 1-4:30 pm, the NIDA AIDS Research Program will be holding a virtual Symposium honoring six recipients of the Avant-Garde Award Program for HIV/AIDS and Substance Use Disorder Research. Symposium registration is now online. The NIDA Avant-Garde Award Program for HIV/AIDS and Substance Use Disorder Research supports individual scientists of exceptional creativity at all career levels who propose high-impact research that will open new areas of HIV research and/or lead to new avenues for prevention and treatment of HIV among people who use drugs.

The AIDS Research Program has also posted a video of the recent symposium discussion with some of NIDA’s remarkable Avenir Award recipients. NIDA's Avenir Awards are designed to stimulate innovation and potentially transformative research from early stage investigators. Congratulations in advance to all of this year's awardees!

CTN-0116: Pharmacist-Integrated Collaborative Model of Medication Treatment for Opioid Use Disorder (PharmICO)

The Northeast Node in collaboration with its partners at Penobscot Community Health Center (PCHC) are excited to lead the new CTN-0116 study (PharmICO).

Pharmacists remain an underutilized resource in the treatment of opioid use disorder (OUD). Although studies have engaged pharmacists in dispensing medications in OUD treatment (MOUD), few studies have evaluated collaborative care models in which pharmacists are an active, integral part of a primary care team offering OUD care.

In this Phase 1 project, we seek to leverage a promising model of pharmacist-integrated care for OUD pioneered at PCHC to

  1. employ a mixed methods approach to evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of implementing a pharmacist-integrated model of MOUD into the clinical workflow of a diverse array of clinical sites and

  2. evaluate the impact of the pharmacist-integrated model on the clinical sites’ capacity for MOUD care and on patient engagement in OUD care.

Once we complete the development of the protocol, the study will engage four partnering clinic/pharmacy sites.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration (SAMHSA) has released a new resource, Use of Medication-Assisted Treatment in Emergency Departments. This guide examines emerging and best practices for initiating medication treatments for substance use disorder in emergency departments. It also reviews the existing literature and science of the topic, identifies gaps in knowledge and discusses challenges of implementation.

Yale Program in Addiction Medicine Core Faculty members, Drs. Gail D’Onofrio and Kathryn Hawk, provided key leadership in the production of this resource, which notably draws upon important research from Program faculty and collaborators on emergency department-initiated buprenorphine/naloxone treatment as well as national dissemination and impact of this practice.

Pacific Northwest

ADAI Changes Its Name!

The Pacific Northwest Node (and the CTN Dissemination Library) are both housed at ADAI at the University of Washington. ADAI recently changed its name from the Alcohol & Drug Abuse Institute to the Addictions, Drug & Alcohol Institute (ADAI). Recognizing that stigmatizing language can be a major barrier for seeking and receiving medical or behavioral health care, particularly for already-marginalized populations, we wanted to remove the term "abuse" from our name. Our new name also better reflects the full scope of the work that is conducted at ADAI around both addiction and non-addiction substance use issues, such as drug overdose, safer use of substances, and our cannabis research program. Read more about this change.

CTN Youth SIG Webinar: Enhancing Primary Care-Based Treatment for OUD (March 26)
March 26, 2021, 10:00am - 12:00pm (ET)

Scott HadlandIn this CTN Youth SIG webinar, Dr. Hadland will discuss common facilitators and barriers to receipt of addiction treatment from the perspective of clinicians, youth, and family members. He will also describe approaches to improving clinical services for youth with OUD and will discuss quantifying receipt of addiction treatment and retention in care among youth with opioid use disorder (OUD).

Dr. Scott Hadland is a pediatrician and addiction specialist at Boston Medical Center and Boston University School of Medicine. He holds triple board certification in General Pediatrics, Adolescent Medicine, and Addiction Medicine. Dr. Hadland’s clinical and research interests focus on adolescent and young adult substance use disorder prevention and treatment, and on improving care for youth and families affected by substance use.
