Annual CTN Steering Committee Meeting: Registration is Open!

The National Drug Abuse Treatment Clinical Trials Network will hold its Annual Steering Committee Meeting virtually on April 26-28, 2022.

The meeting website will include agenda updates closer to the meeting dates, and serve as the log-in page for the meeting itself. Included on the registration page, and in a separate email to follow, is information about a special Listening Session with NIDA Director, Dr. Nora Volkow being held during the meeting (see below).

Registrations received by April 11, 2022 will be included in the meeting Participants List.

CTN Listening Session with NIDA Director Nora Volkow

Nora VolkowAttending the CTN Steering Committee Meeting this year? Be sure to also register for the first ever CTN Listening Session with Director Nora Volkow, April 26, from 2:00-3:15pm ET.

This will be a unique opportunity for CTN members to meet NIDA Director, Dr. Nora Volkow as well as share their insights and experiences on a full range of issues and challenges related to diversity, equity, inclusivity and accessibility. Topics for discussion include but are not limited to: changing culture to promote equity, inclusivity, and justice; improving policies, transparency, and oversight; strengthening career pathways, training, mentoring, and the professoriate; ensuring fairness in review and funding deliberations; enhancing funding and research support for individuals from diverse backgrounds and historically under-resourced institutions; and addressing structural racism in the biomedical research enterprise.

The objectives of this talk from Dr. Elizabeth Barnert, MD, MPH, MS (UCLA School of Medicine) are to 1) Describe the health needs and service utilization patterns of young people exiting jail; 2) Explore the perspectives of young people exiting jail about their health and social experiences; and 3) Examine barriers and facilitators for young people’s linkages to care during reentry. Dr. Liz Barnert is a pediatrician, associate professor, and researcher at UCLA. She provides clinical care at juvenile hall. Her community-partnered, policymaker engaged research examines health services and other systems of support for young people involved with the criminal legal system.

News from the Nodes

Florida Node Alliance

Two minority investigators in the Florida Node Alliance are members of the National Academy of Medicine

The Florida Node Alliance (FNA) proudly welcomes Dr. Hortensia Amaro, Distinguished University Professor at the Robert Stempel College of Public Health and Social Work at Florida International University as a Node Investigator. Dr. Amaro, a highly accomplished public health researcher and member of the prestigious National Academy of Medicine, joins the Florida Node Alliance as part of the Node’s commitment to Diversity and Inclusion. Dr. Amaro has been a pioneer on epidemiological and community-based studies of alcohol and drug use among adolescents and adults, as well as development and testing of behavioral interventions for HIV/AIDS prevention, and substance abuse and mental health treatment for Latina and African American women and incarcerated men.

FNA Investigator, Dr. Guillermo (Willy) Prado, Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs, Dean of the Graduate School and Professor of Nursing and Health Studies, Public Health Sciences, and Psychology at the University of Miami was recently elected to the National Academy of Medicine for his scholarship in prevention science, and for his effective youth- and family-focused HIV and substance-use prevention interventions. Dr. Prado’s research focuses on the development, evaluation, and dissemination of parenting interventions for Hispanic youth and their families, such as Familias Unidas -- an evidence-based family intervention for Hispanic youth.

Drs. Amaro and Prado have been advocates of minority health, and have been active mentors of racial/ethnic minority investigators.

WS Node logoDr. Keith Humphreys (Western States Node MPI) led the Stanford-Lancet Commission on the North American Opioid Crisis to report on the causes and solutions to the US/Canada opioid crisis over the past 25 years.

Pathways to Recovery from Addiction in Mutual Help Groups

In this webinar, Keith Humphreys, PhD (Stanford University) explored the landscape of mutual help groups and the diverse mutual help groups that are available to patients. The clinical and cost effectiveness of group and 12-step programs were also reviewed, along with the clinical and policy implications of mutual help groups for promoting recovery from addiction.

Apply for the UCSF LEAD Program

The Learning for Early Careers in Addiction and Diversity (LEAD) Program at UCSF is looking to recruit its eighth cohort of visiting scholars to participate in this 3-year research education training program.

The LEAD Program uses the NIDA Clinical Trials Network (CTN) as a platform for training early-career investigators.
