Research Opportunities for New and "At-Risk" Investigators to Promote Workforce Diversity

NIDA, NIMH, and NNINDS are please to share a new and groundbreaking funding opportunity, the "NIDA, NIMH, and NINDS Research Opportunities for New and ‘At-Risk’ Investigators to Promote Workforce Diversity (R01 Clinical Trial Optional)."

his program is intended to support New and At-Risk Investigators from diverse backgrounds, including those from groups underrepresented in the health-related sciences proposing research within the mission of the participating NIH Institutes.

An investigator is considered a New Investigator (NI) if he/she has not competed successfully for substantial, NIH independent funding from NIH.

An investigator is considered an At-Risk Investigator if they have had prior support as a Principal Investigator on a substantial independent research award and, unless successful in securing a substantial research grant award in the current fiscal year, will have no substantial research grant funding in the following fiscal year.

NIDA intends to commit up to $5 million per fiscal year for this program.

Percentage of Overdose Deaths Involving Methadone Declined Between January 2019 and August 2021 (NIDA News Release)

National data indicate that COVID-era expansion of methadone treatment for opioid use disorder was not associated with harms, adding evidence to support continuing take-home treatment protocols for medications for OUD.

"Treatment is an essential tool to stop the addiction and overdose crises, but it is vastly underused," said NIDA Director and senior author, Nora Volkow, M.D. "This evidence adds significant weight to the argument that effective treatment for substance use disorders should be offered in an accessible and practical way that works for people who need it."

Time to Start Talking About Pre-Addiction

By the time someone reaches out for addiction care, they may have already suffered numerous painful losses in their lives. Frequently, when a person asks for help early on, society -- friends and family, coworkers, health care systems -- doesn't recognize it as a serious issue and may ignore or deny it.

NIDA Director Nora Volkow, Tom McLellan of the Treatment Research Institute, and NIAAA Director George Koob recently wrote a commentary piece published in JAMA Psychiatry that talks about moving toward a plan for better detection and support of those in early stages of substance use disorder that, if untreated, may lead them to develop a severe health condition: addiction.
