Treatment Program Perspective : Conducting Research in the NIDA Clinical Trials Network.

Presented at the College on Problems of Drug Dependence annual meeting, June 17-22, 2006.

Yong S. Song, PhD (SF VA Medical Center, CA/AZ Node).

This presentation describes the experience of a community treatment provider (CTP) involved in a CTN protocol. San Francisco General Hospital participated in protocol CTN-0018 (HIV/STD Safer Sex Skills Groups for Men in Methadone or Drug-Free Outpatient Treatment Programs). There were several challenges involved for the CTP, including the need for lengthy training sessions with counselors and the struggle to balance a busy clinical load with research duties. Ultimately, however, the incorporation of research into SFGH's clinical program provided opportunities for many SFGH staff to receive training about empirically validated treatments and new clinical opportunities they might otherwise have missed.
