The objective of this study is to evaluate the implementation of and outcomes associated with a screening and brief intervention (SBI) process to identify individuals with substance use, abuse, or dependence seen in emergency departments (EDs) and to provide interventions and/or referral to treatment consistent with the severity of their substance use disorder. The protocol hypothesizes that participants randomized to the brief intervention process will have greater reduction in days of use of their self-defined primary problem than other participants, as measured by timeline follow-back at the 3-month follow-up.
